Interview: Policy Leader

Minnesota Federated Humane Societies, a Food for Thought Policy Leader, spoke with us about how rewarding adopting a plant-based event menu policy has been - read their insights below!

Can you briefly introduce the name and purpose of your organization?

Elisa Johnson, Minnesota Federated Humane Societies: Animal protections, investigations and education.

What motivated your organization to consider adopting a plant-based event menu policy?

"We are an animal protections organization - adopting a plant-based event menu policy is part of our commitment. In addition to animal protections, a plant-based diet is more sustainable, healthier and better for the planet."

How did you communicate the idea to staff, volunteers, board members, or the community?

"We had many positive, open discussions. It only made sense for our animal protections organization to adapt to a plant based events menu. I adopted a successful plant-based diet 20 years ago. It was one of the best decisions I was able to make for myself. As a result, several people have inquired about how I was able to make the transition and why. I was able to communicate those sentiments along with my experiences to our team and board and on social media. There always seems to be one or two cruel or insensitive remarks but it’s nothing we can’t handle - we investigate crimes against animals."

What concerns or pushback did you encounter during the process? Which challenges were specific to your region or community?

"Minnesota is the land of meat, dairy and potatoes. Lead by example and people become naturally curious. Treat them with kindness and help them to feel comfortable. Develop relationships with the animals they would otherwise only see prepackaged at their local grocer, set realistic goals and provide them with tools for success."

What has been the response since adopting the plant-based policy?

"The food options are so good now that nobody really seems to mind and quite frankly, the response is always positive. It tastes good, it’s good for you, it’s good for the planet and great for the animals…it just feels good. That is the incredible feeling everyone should experience when they choose a plant based diet. We walk the walk and talk the talk. It truly feels good and it shows."

What would you say to organizations — especially in rural or traditionally non-vegan areas — who are hesitant about adopting a plant-based event menu policy?

"Food that tastes exceptional and is good for you can also feel good. Eating a plant-based meal brings me a joy and a peace that I never experienced when I consumed animal products. I actually feel better for me, the animals and the world. I wish I would have done it sooner.

I never wanted to harm animals, myself or the planet. I certainly never felt good about eating, wearing or using animals against their will. The options we have now are incredible. Organizations like Food for Thought help organizations like Minnesota Federated Humane Societies to make better choices. Food for Thought helps to bring people together for the betterment of our planet collectively. I only wish we knew about Food for Thought sooner, but we are glad we found them. Reach out to Food for Thought and to us. We can help."

What does compassionate food policy mean to you personally?

"There is no joy for me knowing animals are harmed. The joy comes from knowing I’m not harming them and that so many more people are choosing to do the same for the animals, for their health and for the overall health of our planet. That brings me true joy."

What is your favorite plant-based dish to serve at events?

"Plant-based meats, gravies and cream sauces, pasta dishes and desserts are always a hit for those experiencing plant-based options for the first time. When the food tastes good, people want more."

Is there a moment after adoption that validated the decision for you?

"The smiles on the board members faces after passing the policy. Those smiles came from the heart and it was beautiful."
