The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals (The Fur-Bearers), based in Vancouver, BC, has worked since 1953 to end the fur trade and to promote co-existence with wildlife. The Fur-Bearers recently held their annual awards banquet, Celebration of Wildlife, and for the first time it was an all-vegan affair! How did it go? According to the event organizers, it was spectacular and a huge success, featuring a wide variety of plant-based foods that had attendees coming back for seconds and thirds—and raising good money to support the organization’s work.
The food received very positive feedback and many people were pleasantly surprised that the options were all vegan. Featured on the multi-culturally influenced menu:
Fired cauliflower fritters in hot sauce
Crispy mushrooms with a soy ginger dip
Fried garlic zucchini sticks
Moroccan carrot salad wrapped in lettuce leaves
Mini chickpea falafel with a tofu roasted garlic dip
Vegetable pakoras and mini veggie samosas, both with tamarind sauce
Marinated grape tomato & olive skewer with basil & balsamic glaze
Freshly sliced fruit platter
Corn chips with salsa
What an impressive selection of veg dishes to choose from!
After the event, the board voted to update their comprehensive “Green Policy” to include vegan foods for all future events. The policy reads, in part: “All food and products at all Fur-Bearer’s events and fundraisers will be vegan (contain no animal products, no animal testing).” Check out their policy here. Congratulations, Fur-Bearers, on passing a truly sustainable policy that is kinder to wildlife, farmed animals, people, and the environment!
